Christmas & New Year Swiss Style ~ Part 1

This year my family and I decided to celebrate Christmas and New Year in our favourite winter destination, Switzerland.

This was our third Christmas in Switzerland and what a magical and fabulous holiday it was. As we have a touring caravan, we love to caravaneige at our favourite campsite, Camping Jungfrau, situated in the Jungfrau region in the lovely village of Lauterbrunnen, near Interlaken. This 5 star mountain holiday park boasts fabulous facilities, a well stocked shop and a cosy and atmospheric restaurant, complete with the obligatory Après Ski bar, perfect for all your holiday needs.

The owners of the mountain holiday park, Ruth and Hans and all the staff are so friendly and helpful and always greet you with a lovely warm welcome. We have decided this time to leave our caravan on a season pitch at Camping Jungfrau until Easter, enabling us to keep popping back and enjoying everything this beautiful location has to offer.

As my hubby and daughters love to ski (me not so much), the area of Lauterbrunnen is a perfect location to stay as there are many places to ski and visit in the surrounding area. Mürren, Wengen, Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg are all fabulous and are just some of our many favourite picturesque places to ski and see. There is always a great atmosphere wherever you go and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

Stunning views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains.

There wasn’t as much snow at Christmas this year, unlike previous years, however there were still a few ski runs open and my husband and daughter always enjoy skiing the black run down from the Schilthorn mountain, I think they’re crazy, but they love it.

This year we decided to take our dog abroad with us for the first time. The whole process from start to finish was so much easier than I thought it would be, from the initial Rabies vaccination to going through Pet Reception at Calais. I would definitely recommend it if you are thinking about taking your dog abroad with you. As long as you follow the correct procedures, including visiting a vet prior to returning to the UK for worming treatment (this is a UK requirement), it is a pretty straight forward thing to do. Our dog came everywhere with us, from going on cable cars and gondolas (small cable car pods) up to the top of mountains to travelling on mountain trains and local buses, he can’t wait to go back!

One of our favourite parts of the holiday, is the Swiss New Year’s Eve celebrations. The evening begins with drinks in the Après Ski bar, followed by a four course meal in the chalet style restaurant. The main part of the meal is the fondue chinoise, which consists of beef and pork strips cooked in a fondue of special soup served with French fries, salad, bread and a selection of delicious sauces.

After leisurely enjoying our wonderful meal, it is a tradition for Camping Jungfrau to host a ‘Glühwein Party’, where glühwein and bratwurst sausages are cooked outside on open fires for the guests of the campsite.

There is also the ringing of cow bells, which is also a tradition and everyone gathers round to watch the display. The celebrations carry on until midnight, where firework displays can be seen from Wengen, welcoming in the New Year. For us, being in Switzerland is a perfect way to celebrate New Year and Christmastime as a whole and I would heartily recommend it.

If you have any questions or comments about our Swiss adventure, or about travelling abroad with your pet, I would love to hear from you. I hope you enjoyed this post and look out for my next post ‘Christmas & New Year Swiss Style ~ Part 2′, where I’ll be talking about all the different places to see and fun activities to do.
