My daughters and I love a nice hot chocolate. We love them with cream, we love them with marshmallows , in fact we just love them! Hot chocolate, for me, always seems to hit the mark, with its smooth, creamy texture and sweetness, they’re perfect for warming up on colder evenings, or for simply enjoying as a family, anytime.
I first discovered Hans Sloane Hot Chocolate at The Chocolate Show in London last October and was attracted instantly by the bright red packaging and brand name. The company called it ‘posh’ hot chocolate, so of course I had to find out why.
What makes this product ‘posh’ I hear you all call out, well, for one thing the chocolate itself comes in the form of luxurious pure chocolate beads, which are so indulgent and so chocolaty, you just want to eat them all at once! The other reason is the actual history behind this unique hot chocolate, which I think is just so fascinating.
Hans Sloane introduced milk drinking chocolate to London in 1689. He was doctor to the King and was an avid collector of plants, shoes and artefacts. His collection started the British Museum, Natural History Museum and the British Library. All of Hans Sloane products are hand made in Surrey and are certified by the Vegetarian Society and are Gluten Free. The dark varieties are also certified by the Vegan Society and the different flavours range from Smooth Milk to Ecuador 70%, so there really is something for everyone!
I was kindly sent a box of the Rich Dark hot chocolate to try and this particular flavour was recently voted best hot chocolate by the Sunday Telegraph and won a great taste gold star award and I can understand why. I mixed my drinking chocolate with hot milk and 2 tablespoons of beads and it tasted absolutely divine. The flavour definitely lived up to my high expectations and it was everything I hoped it would be. It was rich, smooth, velvety and so very, very indulgent, perfect for when you crave a hot chocolate hit!
The pure chocolate beads are so versatile as well. Not only are they fabulous as drinking chocolate (enjoyable both with hot or cold milk for warmer days) you can also add them to your desserts or mix a few into your favourite coffee. You can also use them to make delicious chocolate recipes and blend them with fruit to make a chocolate smoothie. The possibilities are simply endless.
I added my Rich Dark chocolate beads to a bowl of vanilla Greek yogurt, which tasted absolutely delicious and made a very enjoyable change. I think next time I’ll try a chocolate recipe with them, that’s if there are any left!
