As you may or may not know, one of my all time loves, is reading. I especially enjoy reading crime and psychological thrillers, as I love the excitement that a thriller can provide especially with a great and completely unexpected twist at the end, however every now and then, whether I am enjoying a holiday abroad or just enjoying a staycation, I love to indulge in a girly and fun summer read.
What I love about summer reads are the evocative atmosphere they can provide, the amazing imagery they can produce and just the perfect idyllic locations they are set in. I love the thought of the sun glistening off the sea, the warmth of the sun on the skin and all the delicious and mouth-watering local foods. I also love books with a strong friendship element to them and they’ve also got to have a catchy and interesting title too.
So, with all this in mind, it got me thinking about some fabulous summer reads I have come across over the past couple of years and these select few are the ones that have stuck in my mind and stand out as being amongst some of my favourite books to take on holiday with me, or to just indulge in at home, when the weather is warming up. If you’re like me and also enjoy the odd bit of romance here and there, then these books also provide that element too. So what are you waiting for, get enjoying those summer reads and be transported to the place of your dreams.
I first read I Love Capri by Belinda Jones a few years ago and absolutely loved it! I’ve yet to visit the island of Capri, but it is definitely on my list as being one of my top places to visit. I love Italy and the Italian culture, so reading this book evoked wonderful feelings of this special place, not to mention the added bonus of an Italian love interest! This book will capture your heart and make you yearn for long summer days and romantic balmy evenings.
The Chocolate Lovers’ Club is by far my favourite book by Carole Matthews. It’s full of fun, laughter and romance with the friendship of four best friends right at the heart of the story. I first came across this book while holidaying in Egypt several years ago. It had been left by a previous guest for another guest to enjoy and as soon as I laid my eyes on the front cover, I instantly knew I was going to love this book. I mean, who doesn’t love chocolate?
There are several sequels to this book, including The Chocolate Lovers’ Christmas, The Chocolate Lovers’ Diet and The Chocolate Lovers’ Wedding and they are all equally as good. So if you’re looking for a great story of friendship, set within the café called Chocolate Heaven, then this could just be the book for you.
Set in the beautiful location of Crete, The Summer Escape by Lily Graham ticks all the boxes. You are instantly transported to this picturesque island and with sea-front tavernas and sun-drenched olive groves, this is the perfect book to lose yourself in.
The Villa by Rosanna Ley is also set in another of my bucket list locations, Sicily. It was after reading this book, that firmly sealed my interest in Sicily and straight on my bucket list it went. I love the beautiful imagery this book provides, with warm idyllic locations set amongst the sweet scented lemon trees. This book is enjoyed perfectly with a nice chilled glass of limoncello.
I first read Under The Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes after I initially watched the film. I totally fell in love with the film and so naturally the next thing for me to do was to read the book. Granted, I should have probably read the book before watching the film, however I still very much enjoyed every part of the book. We’re venturing off to Tuscany ourselves this year, so I will definitely be reading this book again to get me in the mood for our very own Italian adventure.
So there you have it, five of my favourite summer reads. If you have your very own favourite summer read, please do let me know, I’m always on the look out for different books to enjoy.
