My mum has recently celebrated a very special birthday and amongst many, many other ways of celebrating (there’s been quite a few), she wanted to take myself and my sister to London for a girly, family weekend away and enjoy even more birthday celebrations in the capital.
Like me, my mum adores Afternoon Tea, so naturally booking one of these delicious experiences was an absolute must. My sister, mum and I got to work straight away, checking out which Afternoon Teas we fancied the most (and there was quite a lot to choose from, believe me) eventually narrowing down a selection of our favourite ones, with the final decision ultimately being left to mum, well it was her birthday after all.
The winning Afternoon Tea was Tipsy Tea at Mr Fogg’s Residence in Mayfair and it couldn’t have been a better choice, I mean, what can I say, you had me at Tipsy Tea!
A small plaque on the wall of the building and Victorian lanterns marked our arrival at Mr Fogg’s Residence and we were greeted with a doorman, who had our names written down on a clipboard. Once he had ticked our names off, he rang the doorbell and knocked three times, which was a really cool way of entering the building and we were then shown inside. The staff who greeted us were dressed in fabulous outfits in keeping with the theme and were so friendly and polite. We were then taken to our table, ready to begin our Afternoon Tea and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere.
Mr Fogg’s is of course referring to Jules Verne’s fictional character, explorer Phileas Fogg, who travelled around the world in 80 days and the interior of the building is a recreation of what would have been the Victorian residence of Phileas Fogg back in 1873, complete with all sorts of memorabilia from all corners of the globe. Stepping inside his residence was like stepping back in time, literally. There was so much to see you couldn’t help but keep looking around the room, spotting new things at every turn. There was even a recording of Phileas Fogg’s adventures being played in the toilets! Never a dull moment.
We had already decided which kind of Tipsy Tea we wanted when booking the Afternoon Tea, as there are three main choices to choose from. We all opted for the Tipsy Tea with a single teapot of either spirited or champagne tea, which cost £40 per person. Once we were sat down, we were given a menu with the choices of either three types of spirited tea or three types of champagne tea and after a relatively quick perusal, we decided which ones we would go for.
Both my sister and I chose The Drunken Duchess champagne tea, which consisted of Reyka vodka, crème de mûre, cranberry juice, lemon bitters, homemade sugar syrup and fresh lemon juice, topped with Veuve Clicquot Rich champagne, which was absolutely delicious and so refreshing and my mum decided on the Japan-teas, which consisted of Hendrick’s gin, Luxardo Sangue Morlacco cherry liqueur, orgeat syrup, apple juice and fresh lemon juice, topped with Veuve Clicquot Rich champagne.
I loved how the teapots were presented, with colourful decorations and a cherry inserted into the lid. Now, call me old fashioned, but I usually drink “hot” tea from a teapot, but on this occasion, the teas were ice cold and pink, which seemed rather odd at first, but it worked extremely well and you soon got use to the concept of cold, colourful tea being poured from an elegant teapot. It was such a great and unique idea.
The speciality teas were all served alongside a selection of delicious sandwiches and scrumptious cakes and there was definitely enough food for all three of us, we were quite stuffed by the end.
As well as Mr Fogg’s Residence in Mayfair, there is also Mr Fogg’s Tavern in Covent Garden and right next door to that is Mr Fogg’s Gin Parlour. So whatever takes your fancy, there are lots of choices to be had.
This themed Afternoon Tea was just perfect and the wonderful staff even brought out a small birthday treat for my mum, complete with a signed birthday card from Phileas Fogg himself!
It was such a fun and unique experience, we are already planning our return visit. So if you’re looking to try something different, book yourself in with Mr Fogg and you can have your very own tipsy afternoon tea too.
