Whilst in London recently celebrating my mum’s birthday, we just had to visit the well known street, Portobello Road in Notting Hill. Famous for its antiques market on Saturdays and for a fabulous collection of independent shops, this place is perfect if you’re looking to buy something a little bit different or if you just fancy a leisurely stroll, taking in the bustling and energetic atmosphere of London life.
Not only is Portobello Road famous for its collection of antiques, second-hand goods, clothing, fashion and excellent book stalls, it has also been featured and referred to in many films and television programs. The market was featured in the 1971 musical Bedknobs and Broomsticks, where a set was built at Disney’s Burbank studios to represent the people who live and work there. Paddington Bear, a children’s book character, also enjoys visiting Portobello Market on a daily basis and it was also the setting for the 1999 film Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. This movie definitely put Portobello Road on the map for me.
One of the main attractions of Portobello Road for me, apart from the many interesting stalls and its intriguing history, are all the wonderfully coloured Victorian houses that prettily line the street. Painted in either vibrant or pastel colours, it’s a great place to take many photographs and believe me, I took quite a few, much to the slight annoyance of my family, who unfortunately had to keep waiting for me to catch up with them. There is even the house that novelist George Orwell lived in from 1903 to 1950 sitting proudly amongst the colourful buildings, yet another photo opportunity to be had.
After spending quite a while walking up and down the street, soaking up the wonderful atmosphere and after completing our tour of the market and shops, it was unfortunately time to leave Portobello Road behind. With our newly acquired purchases tucked lovingly away in our bags and with my camera full of colourful shots, we said our goodbyes to Notting Hill and headed off in search of other wonderful things to photograph and enjoy.
Have you visited Portobello Road before? If not, get yourself over there, it’s a great place to pick up unusual or unique items and definitely don’t forget your camera for all those colourful photographs. I was hoping to bump into Hugh Grant, but he must have been busy that day. Oh well.
